Tuition Reduction Program for Ph.D. & Ed.D. Students Who are Foreign Citizens
  1. Are M.B.A., M.F.A., M.U.R.P., or other master’s degree candidates eligible for this program?
  2. By how much is the non-resident tuition reduced?
  3. What happens to the non-resident tuition level when a Ph.D. (Ed.D) candidate does not complete the Ph.D. (Ed.D) degree within three years of advancement to candidacy?
  4. What happens when a student has filed for their degree (paying only the Filing Fee) and then, at a later time, must re-register? Would the student be eligible for the reduced non-resident tuition?
  5. Is a qualified student who receives funding from an outside agency to cover the cost of non-resident tuition eligible for the reduction?

1. Are M.B.A., M.F.A., M.U.R.P., or other master’s degree candidates eligible for this program?

No, only Ph.D. & Ed.D. students at UCI qualify for the non-resident tuition reduction program. M.D. students do not qualify.

2. By how much is the non-resident tuition reduced?

The annual non-resident tuition fee is reduced by 100% for a maximum of three consecutive calendar years after the student is advanced to candidacy. Students continue to be assessed the Educational fee, Registration fee, GSHIP, and other local campus fees.

3. What happens to the non-resident tuition level when a Ph.D. (Ed.D) candidate does not complete the Ph.D. (Ed.D) degree within three years of advancement to candidacy?

The student is then assessed the full amount of the prevailing tuition for every academic quarter which s/he registers after three years in candidacy.

4. What happens when a student has filed for their degree (paying only the Filing Fee) and then, at a later time, must re-register? Would the student be eligible for the reduced non-resident tuition?

Yes, provided that the time remains on the three years of eligibility following advancement to candidacy.

5. Is a qualified student who receives funding from an outside agency to cover the cost of non-resident tuition eligible for the reduction?

Yes, the student is eligible for the reduction if they meet the criteria. The source of the student’s funding is not relevant to the fee assessment.

6. Will students working on a joint Ph.D./master’s degree be eligible for the reduced non-resident tuition?

A student enrolled in a joint Ph.D./master’s degree program is eligible for the reduced non-resident tuition only after advancement to candidacy for the Ph.D. portion of their degree program.

7. Are students enrolled part-time in a Ph.D. or Ed.D program eligible for the reduced non-resident tuition?

Yes, a non-resident part-time student, who meets the established criteria is eligible as outlined above.
