The above premiums represent the line-item breakdown of the various health care components, and GSHIP premiums, that have been negotiated at UCI. Since the GSHIP plan is a mandatory plan for all graduate students, the total premium amount will always be INCLUDED in your student fees; i.e., it will not be listed separately. Therefore, when you receive your quarterly UCI ZotBill, the fees assessed/listed include your mandatory GSHIP premium amounts.
Including the GSHIP insurance premium as part of your student fees works to our students' advantage in a couple of ways. First, GSHIP expenses are included in UCI's estimated over-all educational costs when calculating financial aid or need for our graduate students. Consequently, this may help students qualify for financial-aid grants, fellowships, fee remissions, or other financial aid that then covers their health insurance costs. Second, student fees represent a deductible educational expense when students prepare their year-end income tax returns. Thus, this fee structure arrangement works to our students' collective advantage.
Overall, the comprehensive health care benefits provided by UCI's GSHIP plan offers excellent value for our students. This is achieved by pooling the health care needs and risks of all of our graduate and professional students. UCI's GSHIP plan is arguably the best of any college or university in the nation, because at UCI, we care about your ultimate success.
