Immunizations

Graduate students should be up-to-date with all immunizations prior to arriving at UCI. When you make your first appointment with your Primary Care Physician (PCP), in order to establish medical care locally, it is strongly recommended that you bring your list of completed immunizations to your appointment and review them with your new PCP. Your PCP will then be able to make certain that you are kept up-to-date with any required or recommended immunizations. You should always keep an up-to-date list of your immunizations for your personal records, too. You will need this listing from time-to-time when completing various health forms including government paperwork prior to traveling overseas.
Additionally, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) has an excellent web site where you can learn more about immunizations and vaccinations. They also provide the latest information about international traveling. Please review this important information well in advance of any foreign travel.
Note only to first year medical students expecting to enroll in UCI's School of Medicine's M.D. program. For your protection and the protection of future patients, you are required to have a verified record of all immunizations, and/or applicable titers proving personal immunity to a particular disease, prior to the beginning of your medical studies. Specifically, you are required to have received the following immunizations: Hepatitis A & B, Polio series, initial DPT series, up-to-date D-T boosters, M-M-R (initial plus booster), and Varicella. A PPD Tuberculin skin test is also required. You can usually have required immunizations all at once. You probably have had most of them already, while some may just need to be updated with boosters. Unfortunately, these required immunizations are not a covered benefit of the UCI GSHIP Plan since they are program specific and must be received prior to your actual enrollment at UCI. This note applies only to students enrolling in UCI's M.D. program.
Immunizations covered by your GSHIP plan:
  • Polio Vaccine
  • MMR (mumps, measles, rubella)
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • PPD Tuberculin test (although not an immunization, it is a covered benefit.)
Immunizations NOT covered by your GSHIP policy:
  • Diptheria/Tetanus
  • Meningococcal vaccine (recommended by the CDC for dorm living)
  • Varicella vaccine (chickenpox)
  • Travel immunizations, e.g., Typhoid, Typhus, and Cholera.
For those immunizations not covered by your GSHIP policy, you might consider a couple of low cost alternatives used by students in the past. While the University cannot recommend these providers of immunizations, their contact information is provided here as a possible resource. They are:
  • Orange County Health Department Immunization appointments - 1(800) 564-8448
  • Passport Health in Tustin - (714) 258-7196
Should you have any questions regarding immunizations or benefits, please contact your personal physician or call UCI's GSHIP Coordinator, Mary Jo Gallegos at (949) 824-2388.
