California Community College Internship Program US 297

DESCRIPTION:

The California Community College Internship Program (CCCIP) offers qualified full time UCI PhD and MFA students aspiring to pursue an academic career in teaching, policy development, or administration the opportunity to learn about faculty life, governance, and teaching at one of the local community colleges. A traditional graduate degree from a research institution generally does not provide the graduate student adequate preparation for a career choice of teaching in a community college; this program addresses this lack of experience.

Selected UCI graduate students, with strong teaching backgrounds, will be partnered with faculty at community colleges affiliated with UCI for a period of two to three quarters. In the fall quarter graduate students will undertake orientation to the community college and the faculty or administrative partner, observing in the classroom, attending college faculty meetings as appropriate, and conducting preliminary planning with the community college partner for winter and/or spring activities. Winter and/or spring, students engage in substantive teaching, extracurricular support, and other aspects of community college responsibility.

Students are required to commit to the program for a minimum of two quarters and a maximum of three in an academic year. They are matched with community college faculty and administrators on the basis of shared disciplines and goals. Together, choosing from a menu of suggested activities, the faculty and graduate students develop a contract, agreeing on a variety of mutually beneficial activities that will strengthen the graduate student’s preparation for a professional career in a community college. Students will register for 2-8 units per quarter, depending on the number of hours involved, and will receive a certificate upon completing a minimum of 40 hours over the course of the academic year. More importantly, students directly experience academic life in a community college environment, an opportunity that is highly beneficial to a student’s career planning.
