Graduate Council
The Graduate Council is a standing committee of the Academic Senate. Composed of 12 faculty members, three graduate students, and the Dean of Graduate Studies (ex officio), the Council is responsible for all academic standards and other matters related to graduate education on campus. In addition, a representative of the University Library is appointed to serve on the Council. Graduate Dean Carolyn Boyd and others within UCI's Office of Graduate Studies work closely with the Graduate Council in developing new policies and procedures related to graduate education. The Council meets once a month, generally on the first Thursday, scheduling additional meetings as needed. Faculty members are appointed to the Graduate Council by the UCI Academic Senate's Committee on Committees, and serve for three years. Student representatives are nominated by the Association of Graduate Students (AGS) on an annual basis. Major duties of the Council include periodic reviews of all graduate programs to make certain they are functioning at the highest possible academic level, evaluating proposals for new graduate programs, providing oversight over existing programs, and planning for the future of Graduate Education at UCI. Queries for the Council may be directed to the Chair via Jill Kato, Council Analyst & Liaison.
