Postdoctoral Scholars Grievance Procedure

UC Academic Personnel Manual, APM 390-40, provides an overview of the system-wide grievance policy for Postdoctoral Scholars. On a local level, general provisions of the policy as well as step-by-step procedures for filing an informal or formal grievance are provided in APP 4-15 located on UCI’s Office of Academic Personnel website. The purpose of these campus-specific procedures is to provide guidance to Postdoctoral Scholars of the Irvine campus who wish to grieve or appeal an action. Although APP 4-15 is intended to enhance APM 390-40, APP 4-15 is formulated within the parameters of APM 390-40 and therefore, must be adhered to concurrently.

A grievance is defined as (1) a complaint or appeal by a Postdoctoral Scholar that a specific act by the University was arbitrary or capricious and adversely affected the Scholar's then-existing appointment or training program; or, (2) a claim by a Postdoctoral Scholar of a violation of applicable University rules, regulations, or policies which adversely affected the Post-doctoral Scholar's then-existing appointment or training program.
