“Other” Graduate Student Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities for Graduate Students (other than Teaching or Research Assistantships) may be available. However, if a graduate student has more than one appointment, the combination of all campus-wide employment (including By Agreement appointments), may not exceed 220 hours (50% appointment) of work or paid campus service during any academic quarter.
Positions in the Student Assistant Series are designated as non-academic, casual/restricted appointments for all UCI students. Responsibilities are varied and the work assigned can range from simple and routine tasks to complex assignments requiring the application of academic and/or technical skill or training. Appointments are limited to 50% time (20 hours/week) during the academic year and require that students be registered as full-time students. The series includes four levels of job classifications:
Assistant IV (4919)
Assistant III (4920)
Assistant II (4921)
Assistant I (4922)
Specific information about Student Assistant classification concepts and salary ranges is available using UCI's Simple Navigational Administrative Portal (SNAP) web site.
Some academic departments post available positions on the UCI Career Center's website. Please consult the UCI ZotLink website for student assistant job postings.
Appointed Official, Student Activities (4329)
Appointed Officials, Student Activities, are registered students who exercise administrative authority in carrying out the duties of the positions for which they are selected. Appointments are limited to no more than 50% time (20 hours/week) during the academic year and require registration as a full-time student. Assignments may be short term or intermittent in nature or operational for the academic year.
Additional information about the appointed official classification can be found here on the UCI Human Resources web site.
Elected Officer, Student Government (4331)
Elected Officers, Student Government, are registered full-time students who exercise executive authority for and on behalf of Associated Graduate Students (AGS) members for the promotion, maintenance, and well-being of the graduate student community.
Specific classification information about student government elected officers can be found on the UCI Human Resources website.
Head Resident (4125)
Resident Assistant (4126)
While not common with graduate students, Resident Assistant positions are assigned responsibility for working daily with students on an individual or group basis in a residence unit in order to effect a living environment conducive to individual growth and development within the academic community. Appointments are limited to no more than 50% time (20 hours/week) during the academic year and require registration as a full-time student.
More information about resident assistant positions can be found here.
BYA (By Agreement)
Occasionally, short term positions are compensated by a mutually agreed upon payment. The combination of all campus-wide employment, including any By-Agreement (BYA) positions cannot exceed 50% of full time during the academic quarter. BYA appointments should be made in consultation with the Office of Graduate Studies ( smetzger@rgs.uci.edu).
SST (Summer Session Teaching Positions)
Graduate Students may be recommended by Academic Units for Summer Session positions as Teaching Associates, Teaching Assistants, and Readers. These appointments are outside of the academic year term and administered independently by the UCI Office of Summer Sessions.
