External Fellowships

A listing of popular fellowship opportunities is provided to our graduate students in addition to a number of grant/fellowship search tools. Grant writing resources available to you as a UCI student include guidance from your faculty advisors, help in constructing your curriculum vitae from UCI’s Career Center, national search tools and final editing assistance offered by UCI’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
Extramural fellowships are an excellent source to augment financial support and quality of life for many of UCI’s graduate students. These fellowships typically provide payment of university fees, tuition, and/or a stipend for living expenses. A number of external agencies, foundations, or other entities offer external (aka extramural) fellowships or grants that are portable; i.e., offered to an individual student by an external organization or agency for study at the university the student attends. These fellowships are awards or grants that the student does not have to pay back. Continuing and entering graduate students at UCI are strongly encouraged to individually apply to these portable fellowship programs.
Most extramural fellowships or grants are based on academic merit, although there may be some fellowship awards that are intended for certain people like children of veterans, people studying in a certain field of study, students with financial need, etc. The opportunities are vast. Since these awards attract applicants from across the country, they are competitive so UCI provides resources to help you be successful as you enter into the world of grant writing.
