Extramural Funding: DAAD Grants
Graduate Study & Research in Germany For UCI Students

This is open to graduate students pursuing their masters or doctorate for study and/or research prior to completing their degree. Recent Ph.D. recipients within two years of degree completion may also apply to pursue post-doctoral research at libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories.

Fields of Study/Research:
The scholarship is open to all fields. For research in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, or Pharmacy, contact DAAD for special guidelines.

German Language Proficiency:
Applicants must possess knowledge of the German language at a level which is sufficient to successfully conduct their project. Especially in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, students should have a good command of German.

Citizenship:
In general, student applicants must be US citizens enrolled full-time in a degree-granting graduate program at a US university. Non-US citizens who have been enrolled full-time for more than one academic year at the time of application MAY be eligible. Recent Ph.D recipients should be US citizens affiliated with a US university. Foreign nationals must be affiliated with an accredited US university and must express intent of returning to that institution following the grant period. It is encouraged that all foreign nationals (graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients) and German Citizens contact DAAD New York Office before applying to determine their eligibility status.

Age:
Applicants for long-term scholarships should be under the age of 32 at the start of the grant period. For short-term scholarships, applicants should be younger than 36.

Project:
The project proposal should be written in English and not to exceed 5-6 pages in length double-spaced. Name of applicant and page number should appear on each page of the project proposal.

Invitation from German Host Institution:
Evidence of existing contact or attempt at establishing contact with academics at the chosen German Institution is acceptable. It is not necessary to translate this in English. Unfortunately, e-mail correspondence cannot be submitted in lieu of the invitation but may be included in the application packet as reference.

Curriculum Vitae/Resume:
Your CV should be in chronological/tabular format. No narratives! Name of applicant should also appear on each page.

Letters of Recommendation:
Two original letters should be from professors at North American Institutions in your field of study and must be typed or computer generated on university stationary with a signature in ink. Faxes and e-mail messages are not acceptable.

Transcripts:
Your complete official transcripts of all post-secondary studies, including explanation of the grading systems. DAAD will accept one original and five photocopies of each transcript. If transcripts must be sent to DAAD directly from the Registrar's Office, they should be sent ATTN: Graduate Scholarship.

Language Certificate:
A DAAD Language Certificate is included when you download an application. A faculty member in the German Department must complete this.

ABD Status:
A letter on university letterhead from your department chair confirming your "all but dissertation" (ABD) status, if applicable. The signature must be an original.

Applicants in Music and Fine Arts:
You must be in final stages of a masters program and be able to complete the degree before beginning the DAAD grant. The graduate program completed in the home country must be the same field of proposed study in Germany. Applicants in Music should have secured admission at one of the German federal music academies (Staatliche Musikhochschulen) and those in Fine Arts at one of the German federal art schools (Kunsthochschulen) before their DAAD grant award becomes official. FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE DAAD GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP, PLEASE SUBMIT APPLICATION FORM AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS TO THE UCI DAAD COORDINATOR (LISTED IN "CAMPUS CONTACT"). ONLY THE OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT CAN BE SENT DIRECTLY TO DAAD IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

Length of Stay:
For stays of less than six months, the stay must occur either between January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2008. Ph.D. applicants who wish to apply for January - June 2008 period should submit their application to the DAAD coordinator on June 30, 2007. Stays of seven to ten months should take place within the context of the German academic year of October 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009.

Two-month Language Course Grant:
A limited number of scholarship holders who receive seven to ten month grants may be awarded extra language training if the DAAD selection committee feels it is necessary. It is not possible to apply for these courses; they are awarded as a prerequisite of beginning the study/research period.

Monthly Stipend:
Stipends range from €795 to €975 depending on the level of academic advancement. The level of support is determined by DAAD.

Other Expenses:
Limited funds are available to cover study and research expenses, health insurance, and travel costs. More detailed information will be provided once awarded.
