UC LEADS ~ Applications
Eligibility
Applicants must be students at the University of California, Irvine (majoring in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics), or in the case of transfer students, about to be enrolled as science, engineering, or mathematics majors. Applicants must be from a disadvantaged background (educationally or socio-economically) and must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents. Applicants should apply prior to their junior year and be on track to receive their baccalaureate degree at the end of the second year of the program. To be considered, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. Students should show outstanding potential for leadership, an interest in a doctoral degree, and commitment to educational achievement to promote diversity in science, engineering, and mathematics.
Evaluation and Selection of Scholars
Applications will be evaluated by a UCI review committee taking into consideration the following issues:
- the applicant's educationally disadvantaged school background (such as first in family to attend a university, attended an under performing high school, etc.).
- career focus consistent with program goals.
- ability of the candidate as evidenced by scholarly achievement.
- letter of recommendation from a faculty/staff member.
- commitment of the applicant to the goals of the program.
- all applicants should demonstrate strong potential for acceptance to a graduate program in the University of California system.
Application Procedure
ALL application materials MUST be submitted in ONE envelope and MUST include the following:
- a completed student application form - 2007-2009.
- a two (2) page personal statement.
- an unofficial transcript of all college coursework.
- a copy of your 2007-2009 Financial Aid Award Summary (if applicable).
- one letter of recommendation from a faculty/staff member who can best assess your ability for academic research and your motivation for graduate school.
Completed application packets must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) by the Graduate Division by February 22 of the same calendar year as the Summer Research Program.
