Diversity Programs

The University of California, Irvine is committed to the recruitment, admission, and retention of a high quality and diverse graduate student population. We believe that a diverse community of students and faculty is integral to academic excellence and is critical to promoting advanced scholarly research. Among our goals is achieving a student population of men and women reflective of the population at-large, inclusive of those traditionally under-represented in various academic fields and of all socioeconomic levels.
UCI encourages applications from students who have overcome socioeconomic or educational disadvantages in pursuing their academic objectives and who bring perspectives, research topics or career interests that advance the University's goals of excellence and diversity.
There are a variety of diversity program opportunities available to entering and continuing UCI graduate students, as well as graduate school preparation programs for undergraduate students. These diversity programs offer students the ability to acquire and develop advanced research skills through faculty mentoring relationships, the opportunity to present research at conferences and symposiums, in addition to offering comprehensive funding packages in the form of internal fellowships and assistantships. As an indicator of our commitment to diversity, UCI awards over $1 million dollars in internal diversity fellowships directly to qualifying students each year.
In most cases, it is the responsibility of the Faculty and Staff of the UCI academic department to which you are applying or currently enrolled to nominate you for diversity programs on the basis of relative merit and contribution to the diversity in that particular department or discipline.
Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. to be considered for UCI diversity programs. If you believe that you may qualify for a UCI internal diversity fellowship, you must complete on online Diversity Fellowship Supplemental Online Application if you are an Entering Student and wish to be nominated by your department for the Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship or the Graduate Opportunity fellowship, or the Diversity Fellowship Online Application, if you are a continuing student and wish to be nominated by your department for the Faculty Mentor Program or President's Dissertation Year Fellowship Program.
UCI is especially proud of our accomplishments in the area of diversity. The Princeton Review's "Best 345 College Rankings for 2003" placed UCI as number 15 in the Diverse Student Population category after assessing universities in the social and ethnic diversity of their student populations. In addition, UCI ranks in the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine's "Top 100" for the number of academic degrees awarded to Hispanics. The magazine places UCI within the top 100 graduate institutions in the nation and in particular the highest number of doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanics.
Diversity is not only a priority for UCI, but it is part of the collective mission of the University of California at-large. Our Continue the Journey publication offers a comprehensive guide to continuing graduate education in the University of California system.
