Academic Structure

UCI's instruction and research programs focus on fundamental areas of knowledge, and at the same time provide for interdisciplinary and professional study. UCI is organized as eleven (11) schools housing numerous academic departments which, in turn, house faculty engaged in various areas of academic study. Schools at UCI include the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, School of Biological Sciences, Education, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, School of Humanities, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science, the Paul Merage School of Business, School of Physical Sciences, School of Social Ecology, School of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine. Find out more about specific schools at UCI.
The Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies has general administrative responsibility for graduate education and research at UCI. In the area of graduate education, the Dean of Graduate Studies serves as the academic dean for all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; and is responsible for related admissions, student services, financial support, diversity programs along with graduate program review and development. In the area of research, the vice-chancellor is responsible for research policy development, implementation, and oversight.
The Office of Academic Affairs has responsibility for all campus programs of instruction and research. Along with the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, Academic Affairs reports directly to UCI's Executive Vice Chancellor. Matters of educational policy, including approval of programs, courses, and grades, are the responsibility of the Irvine Division of the Academic Senate.
UCI Student Affairs serves a support role for the University's academic mission from student outreach to alumni participation. Student Affairs offers comprehensive programs and services to advance co-curricular learning, foster student leadership, enhance the quality of student life, and promote the general welfare of the campus community.
