UCI’s academic schools nominate entering students for diversity programs on the basis of relative merit and by identifying individuals whose backgrounds and experiences will enhance the level of diversity within the school’s departments. Successful efforts at overcoming socioeconomic or other educational disadvantages are viewed, in combination with other factors, as indicators of future performance. Additionally, the following qualifications are required for all entering graduate students to be considered for diversity programs:
ENTERING STUDENT DIVERSITY PROGRAMS:
The Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Competitive-Edge Summer Program, through the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is a diversity program for entering doctoral students designed to assist those population groups identified by the National Science Foundation as traditionally underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines including African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders.
The
Eugene Cota-Robles (ECR) Fellowship is a multi-year fellowship award comprised of two consecutive years of centrally funded fellowship support followed by two years of guaranteed departmental support (e.g., from TA/GSR/GSAR funding). This award is used to release recipients from employment or loan obligations that might delay progress in graduate study and to place students interested in careers in academic teaching and research on a fast-track towards achieving their doctoral degree, thereby increasing the number of qualified candidates for faculty positions within the University of California.
The
Graduate Opportunity Fellowship (GOF) is a campus-wide multi-year fellowship award comprised of one year of centrally funded fellowship support followed by two years of guaranteed departmental support (i.e., from TA/GSR/GSAR funding). This award is used to provide support for first year domestic graduate students pursing either the terminal Ph.D. or M.F.A. (Arts only) and to release recipients from employment or loan payment obligations that might delay progress in graduate study. It is designed to foster graduate study by facilitating the academic career development of students who have experienced educational disadvantage thus far in their schooling.
Students who believe that they may qualify for a UCI diversity program for entering students should complete UCI's Entering Students -
Diversity Fellowship Supplemental Online Application.
* All diversity fellowship nominees EXCEPT those students nominated for the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship (GOF) must indicate a strong interest in an academic career in teaching and research.
** Fellowship award recipients will be required to participate in UCI’s tracking programs to assess student progress and eventual job placement.
*** Nominations will be based on the student’s merit and his/her contribution to the diversity of their discipline/graduate program. In accordance with state law, nominees to state-funded programs are not given preferential treatment on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion or national origin.
